The Humanist Society (Singapore) will be presenting our inaugural “Humanist of the Year Award” toDr. Catherine Lim on Saturday July 23rd 2011. This award is given to humanists who have made an impact on the society at large, locally and internationally.
Dr. Lim is known for her many books that touch on Malaysian and Singapore culture as well as her incisive writings on the political landscape of Singapore. Catherine has published seven novels, ten collections of short stories, two poetry collections and one semi-philosophical book about philosophy, life and death (Unhurried Thoughts at My Funeral).  Her latest book 'A Watershed Election' is a compilation of her political commentaries on the General Election of 2011, published  by Marshall Cavendish'.
Dr. Lim will be giving a short speech at this event, at the end of which she to take questions from the audience.  Her books will also be on sale at the event.
SPEECH SYNOPSIS:
'Being Human, Humane, Humanist - the Whole Shebang' :  Catherine Lim will talk about her 30-year-old journey - most arduous indeed!- from doubt, uncertainty and anxiety, to calm understanding, acceptance, peace and joy. It is an atheist's version of the sacred pilgrimage, except that the final arrival has nothing to do with God, and everything to do with humanity - who we are, where we came from, and how we should relate to one another in our one-time existence on this, our wonderful planet.'
There will be a buffet after the Q&A session.

In the evening of 9 July 2011, a ethusiatic group of humanists and their loved ones stepped on Singapore first and only offshore landfill: Pulau Semakau! The island is incredibly clean and well facilitated, and a short introduction to this modern marvel left a deep impression on us. The team from The Astronomical Society Of Singapore (TASOS website) then gave us a short briefing on astronomy and the July night sky, raising our expectations.
And we were not disappointed: as our Sun goes down, thousands of stars showed themselves. Even though we were joined by two extremely bright tankers from the sea, they did not stop us from tasting many celestial objects with our eyes, such as a close up of the quarter moon, ring of Saturn, Jupiter and its four moons, and more than a handful of Messier Objects. That is not all, we also had the opportunity to be "wow-ed" by more than one satellite flare. I also discovered that a moonset can be so much more romantic than a sunset!

As promised, the Milky Way!

The TASOS team which provided us with great facilitation and the opportunity to look through their telescopes consists of Albert Ho, Albert Tan, Thomas Ang, and Kapilan. These awesome photos are taken by my dear photographer friend, Chew Hun Kai (website) !
Until the next trip! :)

Humanism is a moral philosophy that places humans as primary, in range of importance. It is a perspective common to a wide range of ethical stances that attaches importance to human dignity, concerns, and capabilities, particularly rationality. Although the word has many senses, its current philosophical meaning comes into focus when contrasted to the supernatural or to appeals to higher authority. Since the 19th century, humanism has been associated with an anti-clericalism inherited from the 18th-century Enlightenment philosophes. In the 21st century, Humanism tends to strongly endorse human rights, including reproductive rights, gender equality, social justice, and the separation of church and state. The term covers organized non-theistic religions, secular humanism, and a humanistic life stance.
