MediaCorp appoints Shaun Seow as new CEO

MEDIACORP on Wednesday promoted deputy chief executive Shaun Seow to the top job, bringing to an end a six-month search for a replacement for outgoing chief executive office (CEO) Lucas Chow, who resigned in January.

Mr Seow, a newspaper journalist at Singapore Press Holdings and Japan's Nihon Kezai Shimbun, before he switched over to a broadcasting career at Television Corporation of Singapore, will start in his new role with immediate effect.

'The time for renewal of leadership is most appropriate as the company prepares itself for the move to a new campus at Mediapolis over the next few years,' MediaCorp Chairman Teo Ming Kian said in a press statement.

Observers say that under Mr Seow, MediaCorp will probably make a greater push to embrace new technology platforms in its TV business, such as 'over-the-top' television, a technology for distributing interactive content over a broadband network.

An Eisenhower Fellow on US media studies, Mr Seow read Economics at Cambridge University in Britain on a President's Scholarship.

'Innovating to stay relevant will be crucial,' the MediaCorp statement quoted Mr Seow as saying. 'One of my priorities is seeking a deeper understanding of our audience's needs; while what we broadcast, publish or produce may not be everyone's idea of what is entertaining or informative, we will definitely aim to grow our audiences and create value.'
Finally they see local talents!

Catherine Napier: In Singapore, a former television presenter has been jailed for two months for abusing her Indonesian maid. Zahara Lateef admitted pouring detergent on her servant's head after a lecture about how to wash greasy dishes. She followed that with a jug of hot water scalding the 19-year-old girl's back and chest. The case was given a sympathetic write-up in a local press which noted the testimonial and the support of the accused from the Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and reported comments by her counsel that his client now saw the world through a window of tears.
The abuse of servants is by no means confined to Singapore but Rex Ferona of the monitoring organisation the Asian Migrant Centre in Hongkong says the city-state has got a bad reputation.
Rex Ferona: In the past two years, we heard ourselves that there had been a number of cases of blatant physical and other forms of abuses that had been done especially to our foreign domestic helpers. Unlike in Hongkong or the rest of Asia - Korea or Japan - the migrant centre could not be organised which means it's very hard to them to defend themselves or fight back. Also there is no contract, there is no standard contract in Singapore for domestic helpers which is pretty very much between the employer and then the domestic helper to kind of arrange how they are going to exist in the area. Last year, in fact the government of Singapore issued a maid's manual, they called it, to kind of instruct the employers how to treat the domestic helpers because the government said that the reported case diminished Singapore's image as a gracious city.
Catherine Napier: In sentencing Zahara Lateef, the judge said there were strong factors mitigating her actions, namely that her maid had forgiven her and had been paid compensation. I put it to Singapore-based commentator Malena Nathan that Ms Lateef had got off lightly.
Malena Nathan: I think this case is unusual because it involved someone who is very well known in Singapore - Zahara Lateef used to be a news anchor woman on the local television channel - and looking at the testimonials she has received from the Prime Minister as well as community leaders, she has played an active role in the community. I supposed these are the reasons why it was felt that what she had done was the result of being in a great stress and great extenuating circumstances.
Catherine Napier: Now this is by no means the first case of abuse of a maid in Singapore. Is it fair to generalise and say that in general Singaporeans regard these maids from much poorer countries generally as second class citizens.
Malena Nathan: I don't think it would be fair to generalise simply because the fact that we know about them has to do with the extensive publicity and reporting that attends upon such cases of abuse. There was a similar case, a couple of months ago, where a Singaporean brought her maid with her to the Singapore Cricket Club and presented her as her guest. She wanted her to have a meal with her. But when the management ascertained that the guest was indeed her maid, she was asked to leave because it was against club rules. Now this again drew a very very warm response from Singaporeans. Warm in the sense that many Singaporeans are outraged by this saying it smacks of colonialism.
Catherine Napier: In the past, when Indonesian maids have been abused in Singapore, the cases have caused great waves in Indonesia itself. This kind of thing is not good for relations, is it?
Malena Nathan: Unfortunately what this does is reinforce the impression that Singapore being by and large the wealthiest and most "advanced' economy in South-east Asia also has the reputation of being the ugliest. People talked about the ugly Singaporean abroad in terms of the way Singaporeans behave when they are overseas. It would have appeared that there is a certain degree of that, albeit abroad or at home, in terms of how these foreign domestic maids are treated, and I think cases like this, although they are a minority, tend to reinforce the perception that Singaporeans treat people from the region, from countries that could be considered developing and not as advanced, in a way that they would not treat each other.

SM Goh says newspaper report on MP Fatimah Lateef inaccurate
SINGAPORE: Dr Fatimah Lateef was about to leave for a community event last Saturday morning, when she picked up The Straits Times.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Marine Parade GRC was "of course upset" after spotting an article that suggested she had trouble connecting with the Chinese temples in her ward.

The same day, she started to receive phone calls. Grassroots and temple leaders from her constituency were "up in arms" over the article, she recalled.

"People told me they were going to write in to voice their displeasure," said Dr Fatimah, 43, on Friday in her first comments about the article, after being contacted by Weekend TODAY.

On Thursday, Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong criticised the article, saying he "disliked the inaccuracy".

He said it also made "a very serious" suggestion that a minority MP could be biased against others who did not share the same religion. He also did not like that the comment on the MP's performance was based on an anonymous quote from a People's Action Party cadre.

Dr Fatimah, a Muslim MP, expressed concerns similar to Mr Goh's, that the article might stir emotions along racial lines.

Her ward of Geylang Serai, while a home of sorts to Malay heritage, comprises a Malay Singaporean population of only 6.4 per cent, while the Indian Singaporean community constitutes 7.5 per cent, she told TODAY.

Chinese Singaporeans still comprise the majority, with many temples and Buddhist and Taoist associations in the area.

Dr Fatimah stoutly attested to her active involvement in various temple activities, such as the birthday of deities and Seventh Month celebrations.

She was also clear that there has been no miscommunication with any religious leaders, and noted that the reporter had not gotten in touch with her to counter-check the unfounded claims.

When contacted by Weekend TODAY, one person who had direct dealings with her for two years — during, for example, an inter-religious dinner she organised — described the first-term MP as having a "warm" attitude during such interactions.

"She was very helpful and enthusiastic, be it whether we are distributing food and hongbaos, or preparing dumplings for the old folk," said Mr Lim Aik Hwa, an administrator of San Qing Gong Taoist Cultural Centre, who used to work for a religious organisation in Geylang that provides welfare services for the elderly.

Dr Fatimah can also speak Mandarin, "sometimes better than I do", fellow Marine Parade MP Lim Biow Chuan told Weekend TODAY. She would use Mandarin during "small talk" with the elderly. "She's very engaging. Maybe because of her training as a doctor ... she has good bedside manners," said Mr Lim.

"When she knows that her speech is targeting a Chinese audience, she tries her best to say something in Mandarin ... and I think that's a very nice gesture to reach out."

Could the newspaper article undo her work on the ground?

Said Dr Fatimah: "Something like that can actually break what we've been building — the bonds, understanding and network of trust." She cited how Chinese-language newspaper Shin Min Daily News ran a translated version of the article a day later.

The article described her performance as an MP as one of the most controversial.

"What is the basis for such a comment?" she asked. Despite this incident, Dr Fatimah told Weekend TODAY that she would not change the way or pace at which she has been working as an MP.
